Mr Barkatali qualified from the prestigious Edinburgh University Medical School in 2004 and went on to train in the NHS as a junior doctor in Falkirk and Stirling, where he found his calling and discovered his passion for surgery.
He went on to study and teach anatomy at the renowned University of Oxford gaining a solid grounding in human anatomy which is essential in performing surgery.
Bilal did his basic surgical training in Manchester and gained entry onto the Trauma and Orthopaedic higher surgical training on the Northwest rotation, completing his training in 2014 and becoming a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at Salford Royal NHS Trust where he has developed a complex knee surgery practice, performing thousands of successful operations.
Since becoming a Consultant, Mr Barkatali has spent time visiting the leading the surgeons in the world; meeting with them, and discussing and learning the latest techniques which he applies in his own surgery to give the best possible outcomes for his patients.

Brian is a whirlwind of a man! He runs 2 theatres simultaneously, performing 10 or more operations a day! He runs a massive practice and sees a huge number of patients whilst producing excellent results. It was a real pleasure to spend time and learn from Dr Cole. Great personality to boot and a really humble and down to Earth individual. Another legend.
Over the past few years, Mr Barkatali has been invited to speak at number of International meetings. He teaches up and coming surgeons on international courses as well as speaking about new and hot topics such as “Quads Graft ACL reconstruction” and “Biological enhancement in knee surgery” and other topics such as Robotics.

Day Case Knee Replacement Surgery: Mr Barkatali has pioneered the ground breaking approach to knee replacement surgery, where the patient can be discharged the same day. Our amazing patient Tracey (above) left the hospital at 5pm! This cutting edge approach involves the latest techniques in surgery, anaesthesia and teamwork, and is amazing for the patient, who is walking only hours after the surgery.

Quads ACL Reconstruction:
Mr Barkatali is passionate about ACL surgery and has developed the use of the Quad tendon to perform ACL reconstruction. This has the benefits of sparing the hamstrings muscles, which are very important and also is less invasive than the Patellar tendon graft. He strongly advocates the use of this graft and feels this is the cutting-edge graft of the future.
Biologics and Robotics:
These are the frontiers of orthopaedic knee surgery and Mr Barkatali is at the forefront of the applications of these technologies in his surgery for his patients.
Mr Barkatali has published a number of peer reviewed publications. He is a senior lecturer at Manchester University and MMU. He has an ongoing research interest with a number of papers being written and due for publication.

Bilal is a consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in complex knee problems such as sports knee injuries, biological cartilage regeneration and patello-femoral (kneecap) instability, as well as joint replacement surgery. He qualified in 2004 and has performed thousands of surgical procedures with excellent results and high levels of patient satisfaction.
Michelle is a highly experienced medical PA, having worked in healthcare for more than twenty years. She has excellent organisational, financial and communication skills, ensuring that patients are always kept informed and up to date with their treatment plans. Michelle is professional, enthusiastic and has in-depth knowledge of private healthcare.
Nadir has been a consultant at Salford Royal for over 12 years. He has exceptional skills in anaesthesia as well as patient communication. He is a specialist in Neuro and Orthopaedics and was involved in the care of Sir Alex Ferguson, being invited to take part in the movie “Never Give In”, the life of Sir Alex Ferguson, talking about the management of acute head trauma. He is also an ex Basketball player.
Jonathan graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 2004. He completed postgraduate training and exams in anaesthesia and critical care at hospitals across the North West of England. Following completion of training he undertook a clinical research fellowship in Melbourne, Australia. Jonathan is now a consultant at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Manchester. He leads his department’s research programme for clinical trials in adult critical care and sits on Greater Manchester’s NIHR local clinical research network. His specific areas of expertise lie in anaesthesia for patients undergoing kidney transplant and orthopaedic surgery. He has skills and experience in the delivery of a wide range of anaesthetic techniques, including advanced nerve blocks for orthopaedic surgery and conscious sedation for complex procedures.
Nachi is an experienced anaesthetist employing the latest nerve block techniques. He has excellent clinical technique and is ensures the best care for his patients. He is involved in education on the FRCA faculty and Under grad teaching faculty on the Northwest Ultrasound course.

He is an NHS consultant at Salford Royal University Teaching NHS Trust - one of the leading hospital trusts in the UK. It serves as the MTC (Major Trauma Centre) for the Northwest of England, treating severe and complex cases of trauma surgery.
He is the clinical lead responsible for elective surgery, national joint registry and enhanced recovery.
He is also actively involved in teaching and training young doctors and surgeons of the future.
Bilal has a passion for research and has published numerous peer-reviewed publications, and presented at international, national and regional academic meetings, winning a number of awards. He is currently involved in a number of multi-centre national trials, as well as collaborations with the universities of Manchester and Salford. His current work is looking into stem cell research and biomaterials. He has recently been appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester.
Bilal Barkatali grew up in Manchester, attending Bolton School where he was School Captain in his final year, excelling both academically and in sporting pursuits including representing his school at 1st XV rugby. He studied medicine at The University of Edinburgh from which he graduated in 2004.After completing his house officer year, Bilal spent time at the University of Oxford undertaking a prosectorship, teaching anatomy, which developed his grounding and a passion for surgery. Following his basic surgical training, he gained entry into higher specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery, both on the Northwest rotation.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and has completed a Fellowship in knee surgery, becoming a specialist in this field.
He completed his training in July 2014, and secured a position as a consultant at Salford Royal NHS Teaching Hospital.
It was as a medical student that Bilal’s passion for Orthopaedic surgery was ignited after injuring his knee in a football match. He required an ACL reconstruction to get him back to sport, and ever since he has understood the importance of getting people back to full activity; whether as a high level athlete or just to keep fit.
